Bret has practised as a court lawyer for the last 30 years. He was a litigation partner at Kensington Swan from 2000 to 2009 and was head of the national litigation team from 2005 to 2009. In April 2009 he moved from practice as a barrister and solicitor to practice as a barrister sole. Bret was a founding member of FortyEight Shortland Barristers, a leading civil and commercial barristers’ chambers located at Level 34 of the Vero Centre in Auckland. Bret has appeared as senior counsel in the Privy Council and in two Supreme Court cases, winning all three. Bret has also appeared as Counsel in 15 Court of Appeal hearings (winning over 80% of those appeals) and in over 150 trials or substantive directions hearings in the High Court. He regularly advises on contact and commercial disputes including shareholder disputes, PPSA issues and  general banking and insolvency law.

Bret has been a barrister-sole since 2009. He was admitted to the bar in 1991.
